My mum, a diabetic, developed kidney failure as a result of her diabetic condition.  In the same week that she commenced three times weekly dialysis, my young friend Scott (the tall one in the photograph) contracted e.coli, resulting in his admittance to Yorkhill Hospital and a week long treatment of dialysis.  Luckily Scott has come through the episode with no ongoing problem.

Sadly we lost my mum last year on her 75th birthday.  It is a certainty that regular dialysis prolonged her life and improved the quality of her final days.  She is greatly loved and missed.

I recognise that research is vital to the understanding of kidney failure and its effects.  Progress in this area has already helped many people; of all ages.  It is necessary that this should continue.

Last August, Scott cycled from Glasgow to Edinburgh raising £1,000 for the Dialysis Unit in Yorkhill,  His shining example has been an inspiration, therefore this October, Scott, his mum Janette, his Aunt Anne and myself will be undertaking the Ben Nevis Challenge in aid of Kidney Research UK.

I hope the (many!) small steps that I take, will move towards many big steps in the understanding and development of new improvements that will combat the causes of this condition.  To help achieve this, I would ask for your support.

Look forward to hearing from you once "my" site is up and running so that I can start sending out the e.mails to all my contacts.

All the best,

Marcia Stirling
